Set on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, Zuri Zanzibar proudly supports environmental protection, works with the community, and aims to better the lives of locals. During construction, architectural firm Jestico + Whiles used regional materials to highlight the long heritage of local craftsmanship, creating a lush and leafy haven that resembles a traditional African village.

Inside, spaces are decorated with art and artifacts from Tanzania’s markets. The water program is particularly ambitious, using ozone technology—the first resort in East Africa to do so—and a desalination system that doesn’t rely on the water resources of the local village. Putting its water expertise to good use, Zuri Zanzibar helps build and fix wells in the surrounding community.

ARCHITECTURE. Building plans were made per the natural structure of the land, keeping the majority of the original trees and greenery. Locally sourced, environmentally friendly materials were used.

WASTE. The hotel donates items that are not needed to local hospitals, veterinarians, and the community. The interiors feature decor made from recycled materials.

ENERGY. Zuri Zanzibar uses LED lighting and offers guests the option to choose the Evening Breeze cooling system over standard air conditioning, saving up to 75% energy.

WATER. Water is purified using ozone technology—the first resort in East Africa to do so—and desalination plant systems, so the hotel does not use local village water sources.

CULTURE. With their pack-to-give project, guests are able to bring items to donate to local education and healthcare systems.

RECREATION. The hotel offers visits for guests to the local school and recycling shops.

HEALTHY WORKPLACE. Zuri Zanzibar offers a hospitality education program for local students, training for supervisors and leaders, personal development plans, and a clean water program.

COMMUNICATION. The hotel shares news in its newsletter and is releasing a CSR booklet. Before guests arrive, they receive an email with information about the pack-to-give program.

What is your sustainability philosophy?

At Zuri Zanzibar, our philosophy is to connect with nature and the local community by focusing on educational, environmental, and waste management initiatives.

How do you forge a connection to the local community and cultural surroundings?

We employ local communicators and involve village leaders in our decisions. We listen to and support their needs.

What do you see as the biggest sustainability hurdle for hotels? How are you combating that?

We face a lack of interest from other local resorts to participate in large community projects. Sometimes, there can also be a lack of local community awareness/education to understand the reasons for various activities. In cooperation with a variety of local groups, we support education for school children and local mothers’ groups to explain the influence of our current actions on future generations.

10 REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD TRAVEL TO ZANZIBAR (AND ZURI) NOW

on 30. 9. 2020

1. A TOURIST-FREE ZANZIBAR. Experience the authentic atmosphere of the Spice Island exactly as it looked 20 years ago and see the real face of an African island.

2. Zanzibar is one of the only equatorial destinations open. Whilst Bali, Thailand and Australia are closed for travellers, ZANZIBAR IS OFFICIALLY A COVID-19 FREE DESTINATION, welcoming travellers from all around the world.

3. Travel without restrictions. NO NEGATIVE COVID CERTIFICATE is required upon arrival, unless specified by your country of departure or airline company.

4. Flying with QATAR, EMIRATES, KLM, ETHIOPIAN OR TURKISH AIRLINES feels as good as ever before. The only differences are the empty airports and mandatory masks and shields which help to protect you from many other diseases.

5. Escape any airport chaos upon arrival by booking the VIP AIRPORT LOUNGE that is used for government officers. Everything will be taken care of for you until you get into your private car and travel directly to the hotel.

6. Take a smooth and comfortable drive. The main road to the northern part of Zanzibar has recently been successfully repaired which means that ZURI IS NOW ACCESSIBLE WITHIN A 1 HOUR DRIVE FROM THE AIRPORT.

7. The Zuri is ideal for social distancing. With its large area of individually built units and OPEN-SPACE AREAS WITH UNLIMITED FRESH AIR, Zuri Zanzibar is the answer to the new age of travelling.

8. The Zuri team has taken all the COVID-19 PREVENTATIVE MEASURES seriously, however, apart from masks and disinfection you won’t notice any difference. Maybe that is the reason why Zuri has a 3 times higher occupancy rate than the surrounding (open) hotels.

9. ZURI KEEPS ITS GUESTS’ FEEDBACK RANKING high, even during these challenging times.

10. This is the ideal place for your Covid-19 escape, whether you are looking for A ROMANTIC HOLIDAY OR A LONG-TERM STAY COMBINED WITH A BEACH OFFICE. Get inspired by our special offers at www.zurizanzibar.com/special-offers.

Zuri Zanzibar launches a new ‘Zuri Corona-Safe Hospitality Concept’ to support the East African travel industry

Zuri Zanzibar launches a new ‘Zuri Corona-Safe Hospitality Concept’ to support the East African travel industry

on 12. 5. 2020

The Zuri Zanzibar Resort (‘Zuri’) announces today that it has launched a new ‘Zuri Corona-Safe Hospitality Concept’ where welcoming hospitality alongside health & safety, wellbeing, and the immunity of guests are the core elements.

In order to ensure that global regulations are given top priority, the resort is planning to implement a number of important changes into its daily operations. These should help to develop the ‘after coronavirus travel’ movement and also inspire other properties on the island to do the same. The message is clear, once the island is ready to welcome its tourists back, the hotels will be ready too.

Since the Zuri’s opening in July 2018 it has had a strong focus on wellbeing, and its weekly timetable, with rich variety of yoga and meditation classes, has been very popular amongst guests. Soon a brand new wellbeing concept will be introduced, that will be built on the pillars of safety, immunity/health and wellbeing, and will ensure that Zuri’s guests feel rejuvenated and positive whilst also giving a boost to their immunity and health.

Zuri’s layout is truly ideal for the necessary social distancing. Its 56 bungalows, suites and villas are nestled within a spacious tropical garden that is the size of sixteen football pitches, whilst its 300 metre-wide private beach offers ample space and privacy for every single guest.

‘’The luxury of space gives us the opportunity to cope with all social distancing requirements, with very little impact on our guests’ comfort and the quality of our service”, explains Andrea Knorová, the Director of Marketing and Sales for Zuri.

As part of the new Corona-Safe Hospitality Concept, Zuri is planning to look after its clients from the minute they land at the airport by offering a VIP lounge service which will include the provision of a sanitizing kit to each guest prior to their car journey, whilst an extensive range of actions will be taken within the property. These include, amongst many other services, UV light cleaning and disinfection procedures throughout the hotel, the implementation of digital solutions for social distancing purposes, restaurant furniture space adjustments, the limiting of the maximum occupancy level in order to ensure time for deep cleaning timing prior to arrival, and many more.

In addition, each guest will receive an ‘wellbeing gift’ upon arrival which will contain essential and highly-rated ingredients such as baobab tree powder. A private stand-by nurse/doctor in the European-standard North Walley hospital right next to the resort will also be available upon request, in addition to the regular nurse on site.

The Zuri resort offers a wide choice of in resort activities, which decrease the need for guests to take tours or join activities outside the resort’s gates. One-to-one and limited group holistic/yoga/mandala lessons will be available, as well as water sports activities with strict hygiene rules. The private Zuri Spice Garden will also only be available to resort guests, and its 1.6 hectares of grounds offer several hidden corners for private relaxation.

The “Zuri Creatives” group has also prepared a number of unique packages that will be celebrating ‘The Best of Zuri’ and enhancing each guest’s stay in a personalized way. These will include complimentary holistic classes and culinary experiences.

“We understand why people get frustrated with the current situation. We feel it on our own skin. Being under a lockdown for weeks…, nobody has been prepared for such a challenge. This is why we are coming up with a concept which is no longer only about relaxation and escapism, but also boosting your immunity and refreshing your mind,” explains Manuela Gallina, the resort’s Holistic Manager. Manuela’s live stream is available on Zuri’s social media accounts, and viewers can enjoy many healthy rituals and positive-thinking tips during this challenging period.

Zuri is working closely with the local government and is committed to supporting Zanzibar’s tourism. Through the new Zuri Corona-Safe logo the resort acknowledges the awareness of the current situation and, at the same time, supports the future of safe hospitality.

Zuri welcomes its guests to enjoy a non-crowded holiday resort, where they can re-connect in their own bungalow/villa, surrounded by a tropical paradise.

Dear Business Partners,

Dear Friends,

Warm and tropical energy greetings from Zuri Zanzibar.

We wish to say THANK YOU for all your wonderful supporting messages full of compassion, positive wishes and beautiful memories.

We would like to share with you that we are all okay. The majority of the Zuri team is currently spending time with their families back home and receiving a well-deserved rest.

In the meantime, we are collecting inspirational ideas for the brand new Zuri concept. Stay tuned on Facebook and Instagram, the Body & Mind focused ‘Best of Zuri’ is coming soon.

If you have a moment, kindly support us by completing a review on TripAdvisor and share your positive memories with the world.

Zuri paradise is not the same without you and we miss you a lot. Once you are ready to travel again, the Reservations team is ready to organize your holiday escape to our resort.

We will invite you for the DJ sunset session and serve the freshest coconut you ever had, whilst slowing down in the local relaxing “Pole Pole style”. Because all we need now is the “Vitamin Sea”.

CULINARY JANUARY x AUGUST ANTWERP

The first Design Hotels culinary partnership will take place from 14th to 16th January 2020 at Zuri Zanzibar whereby Head Chef Pieter Starmans and accompanied by August’s Sous Chef Tom Loockx, will present a selection of “local and fresh” signature dishes that best represent the finest of Belgian dining. Local ingredients from Zuri’s Spice Garden and fresh seafood from the Indian Ocean will be paired with Chef Pieter’s curated menus. Pre-dinner, enjoy hand crafted cocktails based on the unique recipes direct from the August bar.

Jussi Husa, the Executive Chef of Zuri Zanzibar, commented “We will be presenting a series of unique culinary exchange events, whereby chefs from sister Design Hotels properties from around the world come to Zuri to cook with us and experience the best of what this amazing island has to offer. Then it is our turn to bring the spice and fusion flavours of Zanzibar to the world during these reciprocal culinary events.“

Even though the two hotels differ in terms of location and its type of clientele, there is a lot that they have in common. “We are excited to be cooperating with Zuri Zanzibar since not only we share the design element, both being Design Hotels members”, states Duco Heijbroek, the General Manager of August, “but we are also looking forward to having Zuri’s Swedish-born Executive Chef, Jussi Husa cooking here at August next year, so stay tuned for dates and further information.”

Zuri Zanzibar previously hosted a similar event in January 2019 featuring Chef Jens Rittmeyer from the German Michelin Star restaurant ‘N˚4’. The resort will continue to invite top DJ’s, mixologists and culinary specialists so as to continually enhance Zuri’s guest experience here at the finest resort on the best beach in all of Zanzibar.

GOLD FOR SUSTAINABILITY

GOLD FOR SUSTAINABILITY

on 21. 3. 2019

Zuri Zanzibar – the recently launched, design-led resort – is delighted to announce its recognition as the first hotel in the world to be awarded EarthCheck’s Sustainable Design Gold Certification.

The stylish beachfront 13-acre Jestico+Whiles-designed resort, located in Kendwa, on the the idyllic northern west shores of Unguja, provides a seamless blend of contemporary design, sustainable architecture and authentic African flair offering world-class gastronomy, wellness and responsible tourism.

On receiving the certification, Jean-Francois Laporte, the Zuri Zanzibar Project Director comments, “We’re extremely proud of being the only resort globally to receive Gold Certification in EarthCheck’s highly-esteemed Sustainable Design Programme.  This accolade reflects our unwavering commitment to sustainability, by making positive changes to reduce our environmental footprint and improve social impact”

“This award is also testament to the fantastic team behind the construction of Zuri who all shared the joint vision of creating a truly magical resort with ecology at its heart, without compromising on design and style.”

The EarthCheck BPDS Final Certification Report found that “Sustainable design principles were integrated from the outset with the building concept respecting the original terrain configuration and utilising local materials and local architectural traditions.”

EarthCheck is the world’s leading scientific benchmarking, certification and advisory group for travel and tourism. Zuri Zanzibar achieved a Gold certification in EarthCheck’s Design Programme which facilitates environmentally, socially and economically sustainable design and construction management of collective buildings and associated infrastructure. Results are determined by operational data from global clients which benchmark their environmental, social and economic performance.

As part of the certification process, the resort was assessed by an independent third-party auditor who appraised Zuri Zanzibar against the ten key performance areas of sustainability approach, energy, water, solid waste, land use planning & biodiversity, sustainable materials & resource conservation, indoor environmental health & pollution control, transport, social, cultural & economic wellbeing and innovation.

Stewart Moore, CEO and Founder of EarthCheck stated, “Achieving EarthCheck Design Gold places Zuri Zanzibar as an industry leader that has benchmarked its design and sustainability performance against internationally recognised criteria and demonstrated responsible business practices across their operation”

"This award highlights the long-term commitment that Zuri Zanzibar has shown to the communities and environment of Zanzibar and has allowed the resort to take practical, meaningful action to provide a quality holiday experience for their guests. We look forward to continuing to support their environmental efforts for years to come.”

EarthCheck commended Zuri Zanzibar on the following environmental and CSR initiatives:

Sustainable Energy Use: Zuri Zanzibar’s energy use per guest per night is 52% below the EarthCheck baseline for similar developments. This is achieved by implementing self-sufficient power sources and installing less energy intensive technologies including automatic lighting and the Evening Breeze’ system to create a microclimate around the bed to promote healthy sleep, using seventy five per cent less energy than a conventional air-conditioning system

Self-Sufficient Water Sources: Zuri Zanzibar is self-sufficient in terms of water consumption with no connection to the island’s water infrastructure. Water is produced and harvested on-site using wells, seawater and a desalination process supplying irrigation water and clean, drinking water to the whole resort. The resort’s design has also avoided the use of grass due to the large amounts of water required to maintain it

Sustainable Materials and Resource Conservation: The project used largely all local materials found within 500Km from the site such as sand, cement, steel, blocks, timber

Social, Cultural & Economic Wellbeing: Zuri Zanzibar has a focus on community initiatives that improve basic living conditions in Kendwa village through education, training and development. Examples of community programmes include ‘Pack to Give’ which allows guests to bring essentials such as books, eye-glasses and towels with them in their suitcase, to directly donate to the local community. Zuri Zanzibar is also working closely with Zanrec to found the ‘Keep Kendwa Clean’ initiative to improve the serious issue of waste management on the island.  Other projects include the provision of wells around Kendwa, construction of local schools and leading a tourism training project designed to give locals the opportunity to be trained and find work in the hotel and hospitality sectors.

TOURISM TRAINING GRADUATION

TOURISM TRAINING GRADUATION

on 5. 11. 2018

We at Zuri are very happy to see all 10 of our Tourism Training in Kendwa students graduate with certificates from Jambiani Tourism Training Institute and we are very proud of their achievement.

Due to their success both in theory and practical training, all participants, including the 2 trainers, are now continuing with us as full time employees in different departments. We hope that we can initiate another similar project in the future for another group of young men and women from Kendwa village.

ZURI ZANZIBAR CELEBRATES OPENING - A NEW LUXURY STAR IS BORN

The brand new 5-star resort is located in prime position in Kendwa in the north-west of Zanzibar, about one hour by car from Stone Town and the international airport. Zuri Zanzibar boosts a 300 metres pristine beach that is not affected by tidal movements and hence ideal for swimming and at the same time offers breath-taking sunsets. The 55 units are strategically positioned to resemble an African village rather than a resort. Whilst the bungalows and suites feature outdoor showers and private terraces surrounded by tropical gardens to ensure privacy, the villas enjoy beachfront location including either Jacuzzi or own pool and access to a semi-private beach.

Designed by Jestico+Whiles, the lifestyle accommodation has been created with sustainability in mind. Whilst offering greatest comfort and luxury to today’s discerning traveller, all efforts have been made to create an ecologically responsible product, from choice of material to technology used, such as the eco-friendly ‘Evening Breeze’ cooling system that uses only 25% of energy compared to the usual air-conditioning systems. The ecological and social responsibility goes far beyond the actual resort and reflects in various projects that Zuri Zanzibar has launched to support the local community since 2015, ranging from on-going waste management initiatives to hospitality programs.

What sets Zuri Zanzibar apart is the combination of African design and sophisticated elegance whilst embracing the destination Zanzibar, often referred to as ‘Spice Island’. Zuri Zanzibar features its own, beautifully arranged, Spice Garden covering over two acres where indigenous plants and spices are organically grown, the ideal place for relaxation, yoga and meditation. A yoga deck and Maua wellness centre including Wild Fitness will further meet the physical needs of guests at Zuri Zanzibar.

Besides offering guests the fastest internet connection on the island and a DVD library for entertainment, the owner recognized the need of today’s traveller to include a digital detox during a holiday and created a book library for mental stimulation.

Dining at Zuri Zanzibar is an experience in itself, extended throughout the three restaurants and four bars presenting a fusion of European, African, Arabian and Indian cuisine. The ‘Dining by Design’ concept aims at giving guests their individual choice of culinary experience which is available on request and can include anything from an Arabic beach picnic, a cooking lesson in the spice garden or breakfast in bed, to name a few.

Zuri Zanzibar is certainly setting a new standard in hospitality in Zanzibar on all levels and ticks many boxes. Ideal for honeymooners, wellness and single travellers, smaller groups and families alike, Zuri Zanzibar has started to attract attention internationally long time before it's opening. With its own high expectations for professionalism and luxury offering, Zuri Zanzibar will continue to turn heads.
