The resort’s award-winning interior designers Jestico + Whiles have elegantly combined
21st century tourism requirements with environmentally friendly architecture and a unique African atmosphere.
Designed by Jestico + Whiles the Zuri Zanzibar is both ecologically and socially responsive, offering high quality accommodation that sits comfortably with Zanzibar’s culture, climate and geography through the use of locally available materials, African-themed paintings from local artists, clever organization of space, and strong references to the island’s heritage and craftsmanship.
The resort plays a large part in the local community, firstly through offering local students the chance to study for the Zuri Zanzibar’s own two-year hotel diploma, with subsequent employment at the resort, and secondly by using as many local products as possible. These include organic and locally-made bathroom products throughout the hotel, and natural materials from all over the island that are being used in abundance.
The Zuri Zanzibar aims to be as self-sufficient as possible and to be certified as ecologically responsible. The resort uses water from its own wells cleaned by its desalination plant, and its sewage can be recycled and purified in order to be used for the maintenance of greenery in and around the resort. The space-cooling system ‘Evening Breeze’ uses just a quarter of the electricity of traditional air-conditioning.
Zuri Zanzibar is the only Design Hotels‘ member in Zanzibar and it is spreading the Design Hotels‘ vision to create an unrivaled global community for design, architecture and culture, and to become a source of original hospitality experience.
Design Hotels collaborate with Starwood Hotels & Resorts, and, as its only property on the island, the Zuri Zanzibar benefits from Starwood Preferred Guest Membership (SPG).
